FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Washington Emergency Services and NH
Fish & Game Rescue a Moose Trapped on Ice
On January 3, 2012 at about 10:00 am the
Washington Police Department responded to a report of a moose trapped on
the ice on Butterfield Pond at Pillsbury State Park. The moose had been
on the ice about 70 yards from the shoreline for over 24 hours, but due
to the lack of snow cover could not get any footing to move across the
ice.
NH Fish & Game as well as Washington Fire
& Rescue were requested to assist at the scene. As the young moose did
not appear to be injured but merely exhausted from struggling to get up,
a rescue plan was developed. With the Fire Department members wearing
rescue suits as a precaution, Conservation Officers Bill Boudreau & Eric
Hannett were able to place a sling attached to a rope around the moose
and they, along with firefighters, were able to slide it to the
shoreline.
Once to solid ground the moose was able
to stand on its own. Eventually it was herded away from the ice and
into the woods of the State Park.
