ATV Patrol Unit

The Town of Washington has several recreational trails that are used by off highway recreational vehicles and snowmobiles.  There are also several remote vacation houses and cabins that are not accessible by conventional cruiser.

To help keep the trails safe, educate riders, and perform checks of the homes in the woods, the Police Department maintains a ATV Patrol unit.  Our owned fleet includes a 1989 Honda 250 4-Trax purchased in 1997 and a 1988 Polaris Indy 500 snowmobile donated in 2001.

Because of a very generous arrangement with Jim's Marine of Newport and Bombardier Recreational Vehicles (BRP), a 2008 CanAm Outlander Max AT 400 ATV capable of carrying 2 riders is on loan to the Department.    BRP maintains an a public safety loan program in which they will provide a year loan of products in their stock to public safety agencies.  We are hoping to continue this in 2006.

We are also recipients of grant funding from the NH Fish & Game Department to provide ATV patrols at no cost to the Town.  The funding provides for officers to patrol trails outside of regular duty hours.  We have been involved in this program for the three years the grant has been provided by the State.

Chief Marshall has also been licensed by the ATV Safety Institute as an instructor and conducts periodic training for public safety operators for many different state and local agencies.
