The Town of Washington
has approximately 47 miles of paved and gravel town maintained roads, as
well as several miles of unmaintained Class VI town roads. There
is about 14 miles of state road (Route 31/ North & South Main Sts.) and
nearly 30 miles of privately owned and maintained roads. One
particular section of Washington is landlocked from town and one has to
drive through Lempster and Marlow to get there, a 25 miles drive that
can take nearly 45 minutes. For the DPW crew to go over with a
grader and dump truck is an all day excursion.
One neighborhood
association alone has 12 miles of road system and it's own roads
maintenance crew. There also about 5-6 miles of public and private
roads in the Town of Stoddard that can only be accessed from Washington.
Washington emergency services provides protection for these area, but
the Town of Stoddard and private contractors maintain these roads.
