Transfer Station Vehicle Scales

After extensive study by a Town appointed Recycling Committee, they found that 58% of the transportation and removal portion of the total transfer station budget was expended on Construction and Demolition wastes. This was a disproportioned amount compared to regular household waste. The committee's recommendation to the Board of Selectmen was to investigate the installation of a vehicle scale to remove that cost from the budget and ease the tax burden on the residents.

The scale is a Fairbanks mechanical lever type with a capacity of 60,000 lbs. The scale has a 30’ deck capable of weighing most pickup truck/trailer combinations. Vehicles are weighed on the scale before they dump and then reweighed after. Contractors are charged by the pound for the net weight of the load. The scale attendant collects money from the contractor and that revenue is turned in weekly to the Town Hall. The scale fees offset the cost of tipping fees and transportation to the landfill.

There are 5 State certified weigh masters licensed to operate the scale. A certified weigh master must be on site at all times when scale operations are being conducted.
